The Politics of New London in Hartford

Sen. Formica

State Senator, Paul Formica, not only represents New London, but also Bozrah, East Lyme, a portion of Montville, Old Lyme, a portion of Old Saybrook, Salem, and Waterford. Elected since 2015, Senator Formica is Co-Chair of the Appropriations Committee, Energy and Technology Committee, and Tourism Caucus, as well as a member of the Commerce Committee. Prior of becoming a states senator, Senator Formica served as the First Selectman of East Lyme from 2007-2015, crafting balanced budgets, encouraging bipartisan participation and reaching regional solutions with neighboring communities to improve transportation, public safety and environmental policies. Senator Formica was past Chairman of the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments, where he chaired the regional rail committee and served on the regional water committee that resulted in a tri-town interconnection to conserve and share water. In addition to town responsibilities, Senator Formica has also served in a leadership capacity for many organizations, from Chamber of Commerce President to Chair of the Rocky Neck Heart Walk. He has also supported many causes as a member of organizations such as Rotary and Little League.

Anthony Nolan

Anthony Nolan is a first-term State Representative serving New London’s 39th district. He serves as a member on the Aging, Appropriations, and Insurance and Real Estate Committees in the 2019 legislative session. Nolan has spent his entire life in public service. He served on the U.S. Navy and continues to work for the New London Police force. He was a four-term member on New London’s City Council and even served as President during a difficult time. Nolan is a deacon at Shiloh Baptist and youth advocate for many youth programs in the city. Youth advocacy is a priority for Nolan who represented children’s interests on the Board of Education. He has also volunteered in countless programs including the New London Youth Collaborative and the city Youth Talent Show. Nolan was awarded the NAACP Freedom Fund Award, NAACP Danny Jenkins Memorial Award, and the Rotary Club of New London Unsung Hero Award.

rep. dela cruz

Joe dela Cruz is a Democratic member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, representing District 41. De la Cruz was elected to the office on November 8, 2016. In addition to running as a Democratic Party candidate, De la Cruz cross-filed to also run with the Working Families Party in 2018. Rep. de la Cruz not only represents a portion of New London, but also the town of Groton. Not much can be found about Rep. de la Cruz education and past experiences, but he has functioned as Councilor of Groton Town 2014-present; member, Groton Representative Town Meeting in Groton; co-founded/member, Community Speaks Out Board of Directors; former coach, baseball, basketball, wrestling.
